Toxic positivity is the belief that no matter how dire or difficult a situation is, people should maintain a positive mindset.
Having a positive outlook on life is good for mental health and well-being. Life is not always positive and often were faced with painful and emotional challenges.
Although these emotions may not be the easiest to deal with, they are still important for us to face and need to be felt and dealt with openly and honestly.
Toxic positivity does NOT reinforce what true optimism is and denies any other human emotions that aren’t strictly happy.
"Look on the bright side.” “Everything happens for a reason." "Happiness is a choice.”
Although there isn’t anything wrong with those statements, they are still entirely inappropriate and may be insensitive for someone who are going through a hard time. Suggesting that it’s their fault for not "choosing" to “see the bright side" or "be happy."
